LightPost Media & Training offers a three week underwater video course internship that will have you creating professional quality videos with the highest level of certification in the industry.
You will master the skills required to shoot professional underwater videos, using a range of equipment.
Over the 3 week course, you will gain industry-recognized certificates in the following:
- Gates Underwater Housings Setup-Test-Operate
- Davinci Resolve Video Editor
- RED Digital Cinema Camera Operator
You will complete a minimum of 12 dives and 6 days of classroom training.
What You Will Learn During Our Underwater Video Course.
Using a range of cameras including RED Digital Cinema Cameras, DSLR and Action Cameras, you will gain proficiency in the following areas of filming underwater video.

SETUP – TEST – OPERATE (STO)
Becoming a successful underwater professional requires several distinct skill sets. These include SCUBA Diving competence, underwater imaging experience, and underwater equipment familiarity. Gates STO Training focuses on the latter. Providing a curriculum of knowledge on the Setup, Test, and Operation (STO) of Gates’ professional underwater imaging systems.
The course goals are:
- Proficiency in the setup of Gates underwater cinema housings;
- Familiarity with on-location test tools and techniques for establishing housing seal integrity;
- The basic operation of Gates underwater housings;
- Camera specific considerations for the underwater medium: color, light, filtration, and more.
- Tips/tricks to assist the underwater cameraman / DP; and
- Practical understanding of underwater optics: port types, optical materials, selection and application
The Gates Underwater Products STO Training Certification sends the student forth as a Gates Ambassador.
STO students will possess a resume skill-set to help secure work on TV/Cinema/Natural History productions. These productions benefit by avoiding downtime due to untrained equipment operators.

Your Instructor For The Underwater Video Course
Highly regarded in the industry, Peter is one of the most helpful and knowledgeable instructors to learn from.
Peter holds diplomas in video editing and color grading from AFTRS and has worked on many TV shows and films. These include teaching at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, filming the Uber Mini Submarine for Tourism Queensland, and even shooting underwater sequences for The Amazing Race TV show. Peter has even created content from remote Aboriginal communities for The Northern Territory Government.
When not teaching underwater video courses or underwater filming, Peter is usually teaching workshops on RED Digital Cinema Cameras and Davinci Resolve.
As a certified instructor for Gates Underwater Products, Peter will teach you best practices for setting up and maintaining Gates housings.

Underwater Video Course Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the course run for?
The underwater video course runs Monday to Friday for 3 weeks.
This includes 8 days of classroom training and a minimum of 12 dives.
What are the requirements?
You need to be a certified and competent diver. We include tanks and weights in the cost, however, dive gear and accommodation are not included. Rental options are available for dive gear.
You do not need any previous video experience.
Do I need to have a camera?
No, we supply all the camera equipment for the duration of the course. You will need a laptop though and enough hard drive storage for the duration of the course.
Do I get to keep the footage I shoot?
Yes, you do. You will need to have your own hard drive of a large enough capacity to store the footage, but yes, everything you shoot, you keep.
Where is the diving done?
All the diving is done in Sydney. Sydney has some amazing diving with a good range of wide-angle and macro options.
Offering a diverse range of marine life, Sydney is the perfect place to practice your video skills.
How much is the course?
The total cost of the video course is AUD $4400 plus any rental equipment you need.
